Pitch Counts and Recovery Times
I get a lot of questions from youth coaches and parents about pitch counts. How many pitches should my son throw at age 11? Should a 12 year old start throwing curve balls? How many pitches can he throw each week? How much is too much? Unfortunately there is no magic number when talking about pitch counts or injury prevention for pitchers. A pitch count can be a valuable piece of information when determining the proper work load for a player; however it is simply one piece of the puzzle.
Pitch Grips and Changing Speeds
This week I will be discussing pitch grips. When I do private lessons for young pitchers their first question is almost always “How do you throw a curve ball?”. The fact of the matter is almost every pitcher grips his curve ball differently. Pitchers need to understand how to influence the velocity and movement of the ball by using different grips. This post will discuss the keys to changing speeds and creating movement without putting the arm in jeopardy.
Little League Coaching Tips for Practice Planning, Rules and Strategy
Coaching a Little League team can be fun and rewarding. Coaching a Little League team can also be extremely difficult for those who underestimate the importance of preparation and education. This is not only true for those who have little experience with baseball. Those who are former players and avid MLB fans also need the proper preparation and education to be a successful Little League coach. Success should not be measured in wins and losses but rather the overall experience that can be provided to the team.
Best Changeups in MLB History
Every pitcher in history to ever walk up onto the mound is capable of throwing a fastball. It’s almost too classic. It’s a given. A guarantee. A no-brainer.
No matter the experience, origin or throwing practice of any given pitcher, they know how to throw a fastball.
But how many of them have truly mastered the fastball’s kid brother: the changeup?
The off-speed pitch is one of the most difficult to hit in the game, because it looks just like a fastball, and makes you look foolish for thinking it was.
Best Curveballs in Major League History
It’s been estimated that Major League Baseball batters reach base on about 30% of the pitches they hit in play. That’s not very impressive. What’s less impressive is how that number drops when facing a pitcher with a nasty curveball in his arsenal.
What makes this particular pitch so dangerous? Why does a pitcher with a solid command over the ball’s spin strike fear into the hearts of batters?
The answers to this timeless question might surprise you, so we turn to the best curveballs in MLB history.
